You will not believe what came up our back steps on Tuesday. Mrs Cobb's grey tom had been gone a fortnight, and in his place sat a cat I have never seen before, thin as a coat hanger, with a ribbon knotted on her head like a bow of old lace. Mr Fenwick, who has the attic room and paints boats for the harbour in summer, took one look at her and said she had the face of a girl going to a funeral in her best hat.

He fed her pilchards from the tin and then, God help us, he set out his paints on the kitchen table. I thought he meant to sketch her. Instead he drew the filigree of a Sunday tablecloth across her forehead, two marigolds in the hollows of her eyes, orange as a lifeboat jacket, and a pink scalloped edge along her jaw like the frill on the Easter cake. By teatime the whole kitchen smelled of linseed.

Now here is the strange part. The next morning the tide had dragged the bay so low you could walk out to the rocks, and on the sand beyond the groyne lay a tin trunk nobody had claimed, its lid painted turquoise and purple. Inside were ribbons, a dozen of them, and a man's pocket watch stopped at a quarter past nine.

I have not told the lodgers about the watch. I have put the ribbons in the drawer with the good linen. The cat sleeps on top of them now, and she purrs whenever I say your name, which is more than your Frank ever managed.
