The dog had got into the marquee before anyone thought to stop him. Bramble, a rangy lurcher with a grey muzzle, went straight down the aisle between the folding chairs as though he had been invited, and stopped at the trestle where the three-tier cake sat under its glass cloche. Nobody had told him about the seating plan. Nobody had told him about the feud between the two families either, which had outlived two house sales, a boundary hedge and a disputed Christmas goose.

Ruth Calloway, the bride's cousin, was the one who had to catch him. She had spent three weeks arguing with her aunt about whether the groom's brother could sit beside the vicar's husband, and whether the speeches could be cut to four minutes. Now she was on her knees on the wet grass with a lurcher's head in her lap, and the lurcher was licking her ear with great seriousness.
Her aunt came out of the tent with one hand already raised, ready to shout or to slap, and Ruth stood up to meet her. She looked at the old woman's fist, the knuckles gone pale, and understood that they had both been gripping the same thing for thirty years: a grudge about a bungalow in Whitby and a dog that had died of old age in somebody else's care. Ruth did not say any of that. She simply held out Bramble's lead.
The aunt took it. Her fingers opened slowly around the worn leather, and then, without a word, she bent and pressed her palm flat on the dog's head, the way you might steady a wobbling table. "Right," she said, not quite looking at anyone. "Cake's not going anywhere, is it." Behind them the marquee lights came on one by one across the lawn, and the cake sat untouched under its glass, slightly crooked, as if it had been waiting for someone to notice.
