Paw print wrapped in a red heart ribbon

Mixed · Flash

A pencil drawing of a paw print with soft grey shading, its pads rendered with smooth tonal gradients. A red ribbon loops around the paw and crosses itself to form a heart outline. The design sits centrally on a plain white background with the colour and grey shading clearly separated.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the gate, it sticks in August. Stick your boot under the bottom bar and lift, that's it. There. Now you'll want to hear about Bramble, because nobody else round here tells it right.

Bramble was a brown dog with one white ear, and she came up the lane the week the Pearmain tree dropped its first fruit. Old Tom Ferris had her on a length of red baler twine, which she chewed through by the Friday. Nobody claimed her. She followed the pickers along the rows, pushed her nose into the windfalls, and left muddy prints in the dust under every tree she favoured, which was all of them.

When the wasps came for the drops that September, she lay down between the ladders and would not shift for any of them. Mrs Hollis said the dog had gone soft in the head. My grandmother said no, she was minding the crop, and that was the same thing as love if you had the patience to see it. Then came the storm that took the big Bramley at the top of the slope, and the pickers ran for the barn, and Bramble stayed under the fallen limb until somebody heard the whine.

They never did find whose she was. Tom wound a length of red ribbon round the broken branch that night, the kind you tie on a parcel, and the next morning the bark of the stump had a heart cut into it, and inside the heart, a paw. Go on, take the torch and look at it. Some things you don't fix. You just keep your hand on them.
