Tribal howling wolf with paw print

Mixed · Flash

A black ink drawing of a howling wolf with its head raised and tail curling below, built from bold tribal-style swirls and spikes. A solid red paw print sits in the centre of the body, contrasting with the black linework. The plain white background and centred composition show the design clearly.

The wolf came down from the high pines the winter the bell rope rotted, and nobody in Harrowmere thought to fear it until it stopped at the edge of the mill yard and sat with its nose to the wind. Old Maud Tennant, who kept the bakehouse and had outlived two husbands and a sour temper, said it was only hungry. She set a loaf on the wall for it. In the morning the loaf was gone and a print the size of a saucer was pressed into the frost beside the step, four toes and a pad, and the red of it had come up through the white like a coal under ash.

The miller's boy, Tobiah, went out with a lantern to see where it had gone and followed the prints up the valley until the lantern guttered. He found the wolf on the ridge with its head thrown back, howling at a sky with no moon in it. The sound went down through the village and every dog in Harrowmere answered it, and then, one by one, so did the people, standing at their shutters in their nightshirts with their mouths open and nothing coming out of them but breath.

Tobiah came down at dawn and told no one what he had seen. He only took the long knife from its hook and walked back up the valley with a fresh loaf under his arm. Maud watched him go and did not ask.

They say the wolf never came back to the mill yard. But every winter after, a red print appears on the bakehouse step before the first frost, and Maud's grandchildren leave a crust out for whatever is hungry, and nobody in Harrowmere has been lost on the ridge since.
