Paw with bead chain on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A clawed animal paw with purple and blue fur, pink pads and white claws hangs from a gold bead chain that loops over a yellow and orange cap-like top. The bold black outlines and flat, bright colour fills are typical of neo-traditional work. Another tattoo, partly visible at the right edge, shows a dark object with red and green tones.

Oona had the deck ovens roaring by ten to four, and the first tray of tins was in before she noticed what was missing. The flour shelf was quiet. For eleven winters the old tabby had sat on the sacks by the back door, and the brass bell on his beaded collar had jingled whenever he shifted, giving him away long before he reached the bread.

She found him in the proving room, curled on a folded tea towel under the rack. The beaded chain had snagged on a hook, and he had lain still rather than tear himself free, one clawed forepaw lifted over the edge as if asking for help. Marrow was too old to be so patient. Oona knelt on the cold tiles and worked the knot loose with floury fingers, talking to him the way she talked to the dough, low and without hurry.
The chain had been her father's before it was the cat's. He had strung it from the bakery's first sign hook the year the shutters went up, a rope of gold beads looped round the door frame for luck, and when the bell went missing one spring she had slipped it onto the cat rather than see it thrown out with the rubbish. Nobody had ever asked her why a bakery needed a cat with a bell on his neck. She had never quite worked that out herself.
She carried him out to the flour sacks, hung the chain over the nail beside the flue, and went back to her trays. The bell stayed still for a while. Then the warm air rose, the brass cap swung, and in the dark behind the sacks the old cat lifted his head and listened.
