Pea pod tattoo on the inner ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a green pea pod with two round peas sits on the inside of a bare foot, just below the ankle bone. The pod has a dark outline, green and yellow shading on the peas and a purple shadow beneath it. The photograph is taken from a low angle, with a wooden surface under the foot and another bare foot with pink nail varnish visible at the edge of the frame.

Two peas grew in one pod on the south wall of the Hollin Inn, and every autumn they were the last things picked before the snow came over Sallow Fell. That year the pod was late. Mrs Tranter stood on an upturned bucket with her skirts gathered in one fist and cut it free with the bread knife, grumbling that the frost would have had it otherwise.

The snow came in the night and kept coming. By morning the lane was gone and the carrier's cart sat buried to its axles at the bottom of the hill. Mrs Tranter set the pod on the kitchen windowsill to dry, between a jar of salt and a brass candlestick. One pea rolled off when the back door banged. It went under the settle, through a crack in the flagstones, and down into the root cellar where the potatoes sweated in the dark.
The other pea stayed in the pod and waited, as peas do. Upstairs a tinker with a mule and a sore hip asked for a bed, and Mrs Tranter gave him one, and the stove burned through two weeks of wood. Every night the old man told the household about a valley where the snow never stopped, where a lost pea could talk to a cellar mouse and be given directions by a turnip. Nobody believed him, but nobody got up from the table either.
When the thaw came in April, the cellar door stuck, and Mrs Tranter went down with a lamp to see why. There in the damp, among the sprouting potatoes, lay one small green pea, pale and bent, resting against a sack of onions as if it had been waiting for a lift home. She carried it up, fitted it back into the empty pod on the sill where it clicked into the groove the other had left, and the two of them sat together in the sun.
