Pea pod and sweet pea flower on a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A green pea pod split open to show three round peas sits at the centre, surrounded by leaves, curling tendrils and a purple sweet pea flower on the right. The design uses smooth shading with bold black outlines and a soft highlight on the pod. The tattoo is shown on the top of a bare foot against a bright blue towel.

Dear Tom,

The sweet peas came up along the wall at Hardknott the week after the carrier left, which I took as a sign you'd find your way back through the pass when the snow lifted. They climbed the stones on bent little tendrils, curling round anything they could hold, and by June the purple ones were opening like tiny hoods over the dry-stone.
The peas were the stubborn ones. Father always said a pod is only worth picking when it splits at the seam and the three green peas sit inside snug as coins in a purse. I went up with the basket every morning expecting nothing, and every morning there was another pod, fat and bright, its little green tip curled like a question.
On Thursday the mist came down so thick I couldn't see the far wall. I stood at the gate and counted the pods by feel, three to a stalk and three peas to a pod, and I thought of the three of us at the kitchen table before the war took the sea from under you. I'm not writing to say I'm sad. The beans are in jars and the wall is holding.
Come home when the pass is clear. I'll leave the gate on the latch and a pod split open on the step, so you'll know which way the road goes.
Yours, Nell
