Three coloured diamonds on an ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows three four-pointed diamond shapes, filled in yellow, red and blue, arranged in a loose triangle. Soft black and grey swirling shading wraps around the shapes, giving a sense of movement. The shapes have clean outlines and the colour fills are solid, with the design sitting on the outer side of an ankle against a tiled floor.

The fog came down off the top field the night the ewes started lambing early, and Mabel Crane went out with the yellow lantern because her father's hands had gone stiff in the cold. She could hear the flock before she could see them, a low complaining sound like a door left open somewhere in the dark.

Her brother Tom had gone to the lower gate with the red lamp, as he always did, to keep the beasts from the ditch. Out past the hedge, where the lane bent toward the mill, the blue lamp was meant to hang on the post. Nobody had lit it since the old man died, and nobody had asked why.
Mabel found the first ewe caught in the wire, its fleece soaked through, and worked the lamb free with her sleeves rolled to the elbow. The snow thickened around them. Then a light showed at the corner of the hedge, small and blue, bobbing on no one's arm. She followed it because it was the only thing she could see.
It led her to the post, and the lamp was already burning, though nothing had been set on the hook. Tom came up the lane behind her, calling her name, and stopped when he saw. Mabel said nothing. She hung her yellow lantern beside the blue one, and Tom's red lamp came swinging up from the gate, and the three lights stood in the snow like stars nobody had to explain. Her father slept through the whole of it, and in the morning every ewe was counted.
