Peace signs and arm tattoo in a wooded gorge
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind raises both arms in peace signs in front of a dark rock face in a wooded gorge. A dark shaded tattoo sits on her upper arm and a small tattoo is visible at the nape of her neck, though the designs are too small and indistinct to make out clearly. The image is mainly black and grey tones with green foliage in the background, and the figure is centred in the frame.

Dew was still on the sandstone when Ada reached the bottom of Corran Gorge, and the beck had already cut its pale stripe through the path. Her father said the gorge was too wet for a surveyor's chain, so she carried the level herself, rolled in oilcloth against her hip.

On the far side, where the ledge hung out over the pool, a boy sat on a fallen ash with his boots off. He had been there every morning for a week, and every morning he lifted two fingers at her across the water, the way the carters did on the high road to say the bridge was clear. She had never answered. Today she set the level on a flat stone, stretched both arms over the water, and raised her own two fingers high.
The rock gave back her shout once, then twice, then a third time, softer, like someone in the next valley agreeing. The boy laughed, and the sound went round the walls until neither of them could tell which echo was his. They measured the gorge that way for the rest of the summer, by call and answer, because the chain kept snagging in the bracken and her father never once asked how far it was across.
When the survey was finally filed, the figure in the margin read one hundred and six yards. Beside it, in soft pencil, someone had drawn two small fingers raised.
