Mountain range tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a rock, showing a black tattoo of a jagged mountain range with several peaks of varying heights. The linework is thin and sharp, with some peaks filled in with solid black ink for contrast. The ink is the only colour in the frame against warm skin tones, green forest and a soft, sunlit landscape in the background.

My father never walked the ridge he drew. He drew it for me at the kitchen table in Glenmoor the summer I turned eleven, on the back of a tide table, pressing so hard the biro went through to the oilcloth. Seven peaks, he said, and you name the ones you have climbed and leave the rest blank. I asked which ones were blank. He tapped the lowest one, shaped like a broken molar, and said that was the one he had never got to.

The map went into a biscuit tin with the rest of his paperwork. After the funeral I found it folded inside an old survey sheet for a valley he had mapped in 1961, and the ridge had changed. Someone, probably him, had gone over the lines again with a finer nib. The three tallest peaks were filled in solid black, so they looked like storm clouds sitting on the paper, and the molar was left exactly as it had always been.

I took the tin up to the rocks above the old quarry in August, when the bracken was turning copper and the real hills stood across the valley, grey and gold in the low sun. I held the tide table up against the view and counted. Two of the blank peaks were plainly visible from there. The molar, I was fairly sure, was the one hiding behind the haze.

I did not climb it that week. I climbed it the next spring, with a rucksack too heavy and a photocopy for a map. At the cairn I wrote my initials in the grit, then opened my notebook and drew the molar properly, filling it in black, so that when I came down I could tell him he had been right about it all along.
