Small crescent moon tattoos on both wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small crescent moon tattoos sit on the inner wrists, one on each arm, with the hands raised and open. The moons are rendered in thin, solid black linework with no shading, and the skin tone is natural. The background is a sea horizon with pale rocks in the foreground, and the tattoos are the only ink in the frame.

Nobody on the ninth floor of Harbour Court believed the moon had fallen in the sea until Ada Pruett went down to the breakwater with a bucket. It was the spring the lift broke for the third time, and the whole block was hauling shopping up the stairs and complaining about it. Ada went down at low tide because the gulls were shrieking over the rocks, and in a pool by the steps she found a thin white crescent lying as cool as a spoon.

She carried it up nine flights in her cardigan pocket. It weighed no more than a biscuit. Her grandson Tomas, who was nine and sulked at everything, said it was only a bit of shell, until the kitchen light went off and it glowed in her palm like a coin. They pinned it above the sink with a drawing pin, and neighbours came up one flat at a time to look at it, the way people visit a new baby.
Ada told them a moon with no partner grows restless and wanders off. So the sky needed two, one for each side of the sea. Tomas took the crescent to Mrs Okafor on the fourth floor, who inked small things for the market stall downstairs, and she put a matching moon on each of his wrists, neat and black, no bigger than a thumbnail. Every evening after that he stood at the balcony rail and held his arms up against the sky to check they still matched.
The crescent above the sink went grey and then went to nothing, as Ada had said it would. On the last night of the month Tomas walked down to the rocks with his arms raised, and a moon rose out of the sea on his left and another on his right, and the water between them held both lights steady until morning.
