Peace symbol with sun and nature panels on shoulder
Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large peace symbol fills the shoulder and upper back, its circle divided into panels. The panels show a smiling sun over a starry night sky, a sun above clouds and birds, a globe, a field of daisies, waves and a butterfly. Bold dark outlines and flat areas of saturated colour in blue, yellow, orange, red and green give the piece a psychedelic, poster-like look.

Ada had painted the same sun four times before Wendell stopped pretending the van needed a second coat. The bus sat in a lay-by outside Rhayader, its side panels still tacky, and the peace sign on the back doors had a crack running through the middle where she'd rushed the primer. "Leave it," he said. "Nobody reads a van that closely at ninety miles an hour."

She didn't leave it. She sat on an upturned crate with a tin of cadmium yellow and a brush worn down to three hairs, and she painted the sun that would go in the top left quarter: a face with its eyes shut, a night sky behind it stuck with stars like pins in a map. Top right she gave to a sun with its eyes open, orange rays wobbling out to the edge of the circle, and under it a globe the size of a dinner plate, blue ocean bleeding into green land. Bottom left, waves with fish scales and a little gold sparkle. Bottom right, a red field she filled with a butterfly, its wings split by the same black outlines that held the whole sign together.
Wendell came back at dusk with two teas in paper cups and found her still at the doors, painting daisies into the green gap between the sun and the globe. He looked at the sign for a long time, then at the road. "It's the only quarter that isn't a mess," he said, nodding at the daisies. "Everything else is taking its turn to be loud."
She dabbed a last white petal and said nothing, because he was right, and because the black lines kept every colour in its place, the way the sign kept the four of them on the same road.
