Peacock and feather on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A peacock's head and neck are shown in fine, shaded detail, with a long green feather extending up the arm and ending in a feather eye. The plumage uses deep teal, blue and green tones with soft shading, set against the natural skin texture of the arm. The composition follows the curve of the forearm, with blurred studio items in the background.

The paint was still tacky when Nell Garrity pressed her thumb against the feather's eye to see whether it would smudge. It held. Across the cut, the lock gates groaned open, and the narrowboat Sorrel Dawn slid forward on the brown water with its stove smoking and its new cabin panel facing the towpath. Her uncle had handed her the brush the spring he stopped being able to climb onto the roof.

He had wanted a peacock because a man at Hillingdon once told him peacocks never flew far, they only ever looked at what lay behind them. Nell thought that was nonsense. She mixed the teal from ultramarine, a dab of chrome green and a drop of linseed, and worked the neck feathers one barb at a time while the reeds knocked against the hull. Uncle Walt sat on a folding stool and corrected her with the stem of his pipe.
Three locks on, a boy from the boatyard came running along the towpath, shouting that the Lady of the Fens had snapped her line and was drifting toward the weir race. Nell dropped the brush and ran. She got to the lock beam just as the other hull swung broadside, and she waved both arms until the bargeman at her tiller saw her and leaned his weight the other way.
That evening the feather caught the last of the sun, and the eye at its tip seemed to follow the water as the boat drifted past the keeper's cottage. Walt watched it from his stool. "Looking behind you, now," he said. Nell laughed and said nothing, because she had already decided the eye was there to watch the water coming, not the water gone.
