Hammerhead sharks and clouds on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A forearm tattoo with a shaded sky of grey clouds and a dark mountain peak at the top, transitioning into a band of blue sea below. Several hammerhead shark silhouettes swim across the water, with a swirling wave line near the lower edge. The soft blended shading contrasts with the solid black shark forms, and the colour is limited to blues with grey and black.

In the village of Carrow Head, the children walked to school with their eyes on the sea, because the sea was where the sharks went. They had hammer-shaped heads and swam in a line, and the old women said they were the drowned coming home in order. The mountain above the town wore its grey cloud like a hood, and the schoolmaster said the cloud was only weather.

Forty years later the class of that school came back for a reunion in the hall by the harbour. Tom Garrity brought a crate of bottled beer that nobody drank. Ellen Shaw brought the register, which she had kept in a biscuit tin. They read the names out one by one, and when they reached the boy who had gone out on the Ardent and not come back, the hall went quiet, and the windows, which faced the bay, showed a line of dark fins crossing the water.

Ellen said the old women were wrong, the sharks were only sharks, hunting in the shallows the way they always had. Tom said the old women had never been wrong about anything that mattered to the town. They argued until the caretaker turned off the lights. Then they went out onto the harbour wall in their good coats and watched the fins move in order, counting them as they had counted at seven years old.

Ellen counted nine. Tom counted nine. Neither of them said the number that was missing, and when the last fin turned under the mountain's cloud, Ellen wrote nine on the back of her hand so she would not forget it.
