Peacock feather tattoo on a foot

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

A peacock feather runs diagonally across the top of a bare foot, with its eye sitting over the big toe. The barbs and shaft are rendered in soft grey shading, while the eye uses green and blue ink with fine detail. The foot is photographed close up on a dark textured surface, with pink nail polish visible on the big toe.

Dear Dora, You left this on the pavilion bench after the reunion, folded inside a Crown Hotel serviette, and I have carried it about in my handbag all week like contraband. It is the peacock feather from the top field, the one Mr Pennock made us sketch in Year Nine because he said the eye was the only honest thing in the whole of nature. I had forgotten how the grey barbs go soft at the tips, as if someone had breathed on them.

You asked on the coach whether we ever went back for the others. We didn't, did we. Tommy Vale got the field and then the field got a ring road. I kept thinking about what Mr Pennock said when you held the feather up to the window: that the eye only looks back at you if you stand still long enough. You never could stand still. You were always halfway down the lane before the bell had finished.

So I did something foolish on Tuesday. I drove out past the ring road, parked by the hedge where the field used to be, and stood there for a good twenty minutes with the car door open. A wood pigeon. A lorry grinding past. Then, low in the hedgerow, a flash of blue-green, and a bird I could not have named if you paid me, dragging its long tail through the nettles like a hem.

I am posting this with the feather tucked inside, so you can put it back where it belongs, or keep it. Either way, I stood still long enough. Love, Iris.
