Peacock tattoo on hip and thigh
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large peacock is shown in profile, with its head and neck curving above and its tail feathers fanning down over the thigh. The linework is bold and dark, with shading in teal, green and purple on the feathers and soft greys on the wing. The composition follows the curve of the body, with colour dominating across the whole design.

Pell Hartigan's wife had a cold in her chest that winter, so it fell to him to feed the hens and carry water up from the trough before the ice took it. The farm sat at the top of Coldharbour lane, where the wind came over the ridge with nothing to stop it. Nobody on the valley road kept a peacock. The old Ashby bird had come up from the big house when the family sold up, and it had roosted in the ash behind the byre ever since, shrieking at dawn like a gate that wanted oil.

On the coldest morning of January the bird came down into the yard and stood by the pump. Its tail dragged in the frost, every eye in it open and staring at the dark. Pell said, "You'll freeze, you daft thing," and went to fetch a sack. When he came back the peacock had stepped onto the kitchen doorstep and was looking through the glass at his wife, who sat by the range with her hands round a cup.
He told her the bird had been waiting. She said birds did not wait. Pell said that was what the man at the fair had told him about the grey mare, and the mare had come home from the river that spring carrying a foal nobody had put there.
The bird stayed three days. On the fourth morning the frost had gone soft and the tail was gone from the yard, folded back into the ash. Pell found one feather on the step, a single eye of green and violet, and he kept it in the drawer with the wedding ring, because a thing that had chosen your door was not a thing you swept out with the ash.
