A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ines stirred the indigo vat past midnight, her forearms stained to the elbow, while the canal slid black beneath the rail bridge outside the dye-works. Her master had left her the ledger and one rule: keep the fire banked under the copper, because the river Wend had been poisoned once already by a shop that let its flames die.

A knock came at the loading door just as the clock over St Hild's struck two. The woman who stood there had a crate of peacock feathers on her hip and a face so still it looked borrowed. She set the crate down and lifted the lid. The feathers were fresh, their eyes catching the lamplight like wet coins. She wanted them dyed to match a bird that had burned out of the city in the winter of the great smoke, a bird whose neck had been green as a beetle, whose breast had been the red of a forge door, and whose tail had ended in ash-gold.

Ine dipped the long tail feathers one by one into the copper, and the colours rose through the liquor like something breathing. The fire under the vat roared up on its own. Steam climbed into the rafters and gathered there, and in the grey cloud a shape unfolded, crest of plumes brushing the beams, wings opening wider than the loading bay. It settled on the sill for the length of a single breath, then folded itself small and was gone.

The woman paid in coins blackened with soot and left without a word. By dawn the vats were clean and the fire had burned down to embers. Only one feather remained on the drying rack, its eye still wet, blinking slowly at her as if it had been waiting for someone to notice.
