The wolf had been waiting under the hawthorn since the first frost, and Ottilie knew it because the hens had stopped laying. She fanned her tail along the wall of Brackley Farm and counted her eyes the way other women counted coins: one hundred painted circles, green and gold, each fixed on the lane. Nothing crossed it without being seen.

The snake came up the drystone wall at dusk, sliding between the stones with the patience of wet rope. Its scales were the colour of old bottle glass, and it had lived under the cattle trough all winter, eating frogs and minding its business. "I'll trade you a way past him," it said, "for one of those."

Ottilie did not like the bargain, but the wolf had a grey knee and a grey patience of its own, and the lane was narrow. She plucked the smallest eye from the outermost feather and dropped it into the snake's open mouth like a plum stone. The snake swallowed. The wolf lifted its head, and for a moment all three of them looked at one another with the same expression.

In the morning the lane was empty. The hawthorn was bare, the frost had gone, and the wolf had gone with it. Ottilie walked the wall to check her feathers and found the gap where the eye had been, a small dark hole in the pattern like a missing tooth. The snake lay coiled on the gatepost in the thin sun, and in the middle of its back, catching the light, was a single green-gold eye, watching her.
