Calf · Mixed · Photo

A person stands in front of a weathered wooden fence wearing a graphic tee, polka dot skirt and floral boots, with the head cropped out of frame. The main tattoo on the lower leg is a dreamcatcher with pink and red flowers, drawn with dark outlines and some shading. A small pink flower sits on the upper arm, and a tiny mark is visible on the forearm.

Now sit closer, because the wind off the Horn will eat half of this if you let it. Your great-grandfather sailed the Mary Quill out of Whitby with nineteen men and one passenger nobody had booked, a grey-haired widow called Agnes Tully who carried a willow hoop in her lap the whole way south. She had bound it with red thread and pressed pink campion and dog roses into the loops, and when the men asked what it was for, she said it caught what you dreamt on a bad night so it could not climb into your bunk and sit on your chest.

Nobody believed her until the fourth week out, when the boy Tom Haddow began sleeping with his eyes open. He dreamt of the drowned men off the Dogger Bank, always the same one with a torn oilskin, reaching up through the black water for the rail. Agnes sat by his hammock every night with her needle, and each morning the hoop had a new knot of something dark caught in its web, and each morning the boy woke a little lighter.

By the sixth week the hoop was heavy and the petals had gone brown at the edges. Agnes carried it to the bow at dawn, where the sea lay flat as pewter, and said aloud the names of everything it had caught. Then she untied the red thread and let the hoop go. It skipped twice across the swell and sank, and the men said afterwards that the water took it gladly.

Tom never dreamt of the drowned man again. On the long run home, though, a rosy light came up off the water on certain nights, and the mate swore he saw a woman's shape standing on the swell, mending a web of stars.
