Pencil sketch of a star with inset shapes
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch of a five-pointed star outline, with a solid circle, a crescent curve and a narrow diagonal blade shape cut into the central area. The linework is dark and even, with hatched grey shading filling the star's arms and the circle. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no body or colour present.

Sit down, all of you, and mind the cold rail, because this is the one about Tamsin Okoro and the star that wouldn't stay put. Forty years before your grandmothers were born, the Lantern Ring was drifting through the dark between Vesper and the Gap, and every window on it looked at the same five-pointed star, the one the old charts called Kestrel's Heart. Nobody on board had ever seen it move. Tamsin had, because she was the chart-keeper, and she kept her marks in pencil, the only thing on the ship that never froze.

Thing is, the star was lying to them. Each night she traced it onto the vellum, and each morning the points had shifted a finger's width, as if something behind the glass was leaning on it. The round bright spot in the middle she called the lamp, the curved sliver beside it the sickle, and the thin blade running down through the centre like a cut in a loaf she could never account for. The council wanted her to log it as an optics fault. Tamsin said a fault doesn't cast a shadow where it has no business to.
So one night she sat up with the dimmer lights off, pencil in hand, and drew the whole thing again, slowly, pressing hard so the lines would last. When she finished, the blade lay exactly along the course the ring had been steering all along, and the lamp sat square on the mouth of the Gap. She went down to the bridge at dawn and turned the wheel herself. Some of you will want to know if we got through. We did. And the star has never lied to a chart-keeper since, though it still doesn't care to be looked at too long.
