Penguin with orca on ice floe
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A penguin stands on a small floe of ice, with the silhouette of an orca filling its body. The linework is sketchy, built from hatching and fine cross-hatched shading that gives an engraved look. Orange and yellow tones sit on the head and chest, with a blue wash across the body and grey shading on the ice and wings.

You log the crossing at ten past six because the rule says every living thing gets a line, and the penguin has never once been carrying papers. It comes up over the shelf ice from the far side, past the marker poles, and stops at your barrier as though it has an appointment. Marit laughs from the hut doorway and says it is the only traveller on the whole strait with a clean record. You stamp the form anyway, a small blue circle on a sheet nobody else ever reads.

Through the winter the whales surface in the black lead beyond the post, and you start to notice the bird walks with a kind of weight, as if something heavy rides low inside its chest. Marit says it is the orca the fishermen talk about, the one that swam under the wrong flag and was never sent home. You do not believe her. You believe the ice, which in April begins to groan and split, and by the time the crack runs beneath your barrier the penguin is standing on a slab no bigger than a kitchen table.
You watch it drift past the buoys with the orange flush still on its throat. The rule in your head tells you to radio it in, record its departure and close the entry. Instead you take the pencil from behind your ear and draw a small line beside the date, the way you would mark a border on a map no one has agreed to.
Then you walk back to the hut, because the kettle is on and the next lorry is due at noon, and somewhere out past the lead a splash of white goes under and comes up again.
