Cartoon owl on a branch
Neo-trad · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, round-bodied owl sits on a shaded branch, with large eyes outlined in rows of dots. The owl has soft grey shading on its body and wings, with darker tones on the head and a light highlight on the belly. The design is centred on a pale skin background, with the branch extending to the left and fading into soft shadow on the right.

Tuesday, gone two in the morning. The owl was back on the dead plane branch over the bakery yard, sitting as round and unbothered as a loaf left to prove, those rings of dots round its eyes catching the sodium light from Shalesmoor. I have stopped telling Dev it is a pigeon in a costume. He says it is watching the bins. I say it is watching me knead.

I started the night shift in March, after the newsagent on Fulwood Road let me go, and nobody on the early bake said a word about the bird until my third week. Dev, who has been on the ovens since before the ring road, says it was there when the old owner fell out with the council and the tree was meant to come down. The tree never came down. Nothing much in this city does, if you give it long enough.
Last night the wind dropped and the yard went so quiet I could hear the cooling racks tick. The owl turned its head all the way round, the way they do, and looked at the back door as if it had a question about the rye. I left the heel of the tin loaf on the wall, the one nobody buys. This morning it was gone, and the branch had a fresh scratch on it where something had landed heavy.
I am writing this on the back of a flour invoice. If you ever come up for the wedding, bring your own coat. The yard gets cold before the sun does, and the owl and I have an arrangement now, which is that I leave two rolls on the wall and it pretends not to notice.
