Sketchy cat outline on a thigh

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated cat in profile is drawn with loose, broken black linework that suggests the outline of the head, ears, back and tail. Soft grey wash and smudged shading fill the body and face, leaving gaps of bare skin that show through. The tattoo sits on the outer thigh against a dark garment and a blurred stone background.

The lift at Harrowgate House had been out since Tuesday, so Ruth Calloway climbed the eleven flights with a carrier bag of tinned mackerel cutting into her fingers. Smoke was waiting on the balcony rail of flat 14, exactly where she had left him, sitting with his tail wrapped around his front paws as though he had been there for hours and expected nothing better from her.

He would not come in. He never came in when it rained, and it had rained on and off since March, so the grey had soaked into everything: the concrete, the washing lines, the wet pale slabs of the car park below where a boy on a bike circled and circled. Smoke watched him with the patience of an old judge. Ruth set the bowl on the mat and leaned against the frame beside him, and for a while neither of them said anything, which suited them both.

Her brother had rung that morning about the flat, about the stairs, about the sensible thing. She had told him she was thinking about it. The truth was she had been thinking about nothing but the view from this rail for years: the blurred line of the ring road, the lit windows opposite going out one by one. Smoke's shape against the sky had gone soft at the edges, the way the shading on his own flank ran out into bare skin, and she realised she could no longer tell where his tail ended and the mist began.

When the boy on the bike finally went home, the car park emptied and the streetlights came on in a row. Smoke stood, stretched until his spine made a line like a question, and stepped down onto the mat to eat. Ruth took out her phone, looked at her brother's name, and put it back in her pocket. She would ring him after the mackerel was finished.
