Songbird on scrollwork on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small songbird sits on a scrolling ornamental design that curls up the arm. The bird is shaded in soft greys with fine detail in the wing feathers and head, while the scrollwork uses bold outlines and shading to give depth. The image is a close crop of the arm against a dark grey top and denim, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Ines,

The bird came down onto the wrought iron of the west gallery this morning, just after the rain stopped, and I nearly dropped the kettle. It was a small brown thing, streaked across the breast, with a tail it kept flicking as if it were checking the balance of the whole world. Nobody on the lower terraces has seen one since your grandfather was a boy. Mrs Okafor says the old songs were full of them, and that they sang before the sun grew so heavy.
I did what you would have done and went looking for the scroll book. You know the one, the bound ornament patterns the engravers left behind when the foundries closed. Every curl of the gallery rail comes from those pages, and the birds were there too, sitting in the margins on the spirals as though the spirals had grown for them. I held the page up beside the rail, and the bird turned its head and looked at me, very much as if I were the odd thing in the picture.
It sang once before it left. Three notes, rising, then a small falling run that seemed to travel round the curl of the ironwork and back again. I wrote the notes on the back of the seed ledger, so you will have to hum them to me when you come up at midsummer. Bring the good pencils. I think the bird will return if we leave the gate open, and I would rather have it to draw than another tin of protein paste.
