Peony and leaves on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large peony bloom with outlined petals sits across the forearm, with its centre shaded in yellow and deepening to red and pink at the edges. Several teal-green leaves with black linework extend up the arm and down towards the wrist. Soft, unshaded colour washes sit loosely beside the black outlines, and the photo is taken straight on against a dark wooden background.

Ruth had been told twice by the man at the garden centre that peonies would never flower above the sixth floor, and twice she had nodded and bought another. The pot on her balcony at Calder House was a cut-down paint drum, its rim still speckled green, and she had filled it with compost carried up in three bags because the lift smelled of bleach and someone's chips and she did not trust it with heavy things.

The bud came in June, when the wind off the car park was warm enough to dry the washing in an hour. It stayed shut for nine days while the leaves went the colour of bottle glass. Then one morning the outer petals had loosened, pale as the inside of a shell, and the centre was a hot yellow that caught the sun before anything else on the estate did.
Kwame from flat 1104 leaned over the rail with his phone out and asked if she would sell it. She said no. He offered biscuits, then a lift to the garden centre, then his mother's sponge. She said the flower was not for sale. It was for the lift, which had been broken for a fortnight, and for the lad from the council who had climbed eleven flights every morning to fix it and had never once complained about the stairs.
She cut the bloom at dawn with her husband's old secateurs and carried it down, one step at a time, the petals brushing her cardigan. She left it in a jam jar on the lobby noticeboard, under a note that said only thank you, and by the time the lift doors opened the next day the red at the edges had started to curl, and the yellow centre had begun to fall in small, bright pieces across the tiles.
