Poppy and wildflowers across a foot
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A red poppy with a closed bud sits at the top of the foot, above a cluster of yellow, blue, purple and pink flowers spread across the top and side. The petals use soft shading and defined outlines, with green leaves and stems linking the blooms. The colour is bright and saturated against the skin, and the composition follows the curve of the foot on a dark background.

Dear Nell, the rain has been coming sideways across the market since Tuesday, and I have sold nothing but umbrellas and one sad bunch of carnations to a man who apologised to them. The poppies came up from the Cambridgeshire grower in the dark, their heads still tight as fists, and I have stood them in galvanised buckets under the tarp where they nod and shiver like they are waiting for a bus.

Mrs Greaves from the bakery stall came over at eleven with two coffees and told me I should have stayed at the wholesale depot with the pallets. She is probably right. But a boy of about nine stopped at the bucket of sunflowers this afternoon, counting coins from a soggy sock, and he chose the biggest one, the yellow one with its face turned to the grey sky, and asked if it would last until his nan's birthday. I told him sunflowers are stubborn. He said so is his nan.
The strange thing is the poppies. Yesterday I put a single open one in the window of the van to show the colour, and by morning the bud beside it had split and gone the red of a fire engine. I have spent all day trying to decide whether that is a miracle or just what poppies do. I kept the last closed bud back for you in a tin with a lid that rattles. Open it somewhere dry.
Tonight I am packing up with the lamp on, and the sunflowers are leaning toward it through the gap in the tarp, the asters are blue as a gas flame, and the rain drums on the canvas like an audience that has stayed too long and will not clap. Write soon, and tell me the sea is still there.
