Bee and flowers on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo of a bumblebee sits beside a cluster of red-orange and purple flowers, with green leaves and thin sprigs above. The outlines are heavy and black, with solid fills and simple shading on the bee's wings and body. Colour ink dominates against a plain skin tone, and a blue backdrop and grid-patterned background frame the forearm, with another tattoo partly cut off at the bottom edge.

Dear Morag,

The hives came through the gale, though the lean-to over the second one went out over the harbour wall and I watched it sail off like a kite. I've weighted the lids with the flat stones from the old byre floor and the bees have forgiven me, mostly. Tell Dougal the red valerian along the quay is out early, and the purple vetch has gone wild up the cliff path, so the bumblebees are working the whole north side before the sheep get their teeth into it.

The boat was late again on Tuesday, so there was no post and no sugar, which is why I've been feeding the colony from my own tea caddy. Mrs Rennie's granddaughter came up to ask about the ferry timetable and stayed to watch me pour syrup into the feeder with Mother's old brass funnel. She asked why we bother with bees on an island where nothing grows taller than a dog. I told her a bee doesn't care how tall a thing is, only how much nectar it's hiding.

This morning I found a queen asleep in the footwell of the Land Rover, cold as a pebble and furred up to the ears. I carried her in my cupped hands to the kitchen and set her on the windowsill where the light comes first. By noon she was walking over the orange petals of the geranium as though she held the lease. I've left the window open a crack. If she founds a nest in the thatch, I'll let her have it, and you can tell Dougal I said so.

Love, Isla
