Peony and leaves on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large peony bloom with layered petals sits on the outer upper arm, with several leaves climbing toward the top and a stem curving down the lower edge. The work uses fine hatched and stippled linework with soft grey shading to build volume in the petals and leaf veins. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the composition fills the arm diagonally against a blurred street background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been scrubbing the hall runner since six, because Mrs Pargeter's peonies came in off the cart this morning and the water in the copper went cold while you argued with the coalman. The guests at Seacrest House want their breakfast by eight, and the peonies want a vase, and neither of them cares that it is the second week of June and the sea has been grey for days.

Mrs Pargeter's letter is propped against the teapot. She writes that the bloom by the back gate was the first thing she planted when she took the lease, and that she will not have it cut for a commercial gentleman from Scarborough who wants the garden for a wedding. You read it twice, then fold it into your apron pocket beside the bent pencil and the key to the linen press.

At seven the lodger from number four comes down in his shirtsleeves carrying a pot of leaves he has picked from the cliff path. He sets them beside the peonies, turns the heaviest bloom so its petals face the window, and says nothing about the price of coal. You notice the stems have been cut on the slant, the way Mrs Pargeter taught you, and you realise he learned it from her.

By the time the gong sounds, the bloom has begun to drop its outer petals onto the oilcloth, one at a time, like coins from a pocket. You leave them where they fall and carry the tray in. Breakfast can wait a minute. The house has held plenty of things that were never meant to last, and this once you have decided to let one of them go in its own time.
