Peony and lotus line drawing design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink line drawing of a tattoo design on pale tracing paper, showing two large peony flowers either side of a central lotus, with leaves, small sprigs and dotted accents. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, so the design is built entirely from outlines and detail lines. The composition is wide and horizontal, with the flowers spaced along a central axis, and a black pen rests across the top left corner.

Dear Marguerite,

The ferry was cancelled again, so I have been sitting on the harbour wall with your cousin's tracing paper spread across my knees, trying to copy the lotus from the back of the shrine postcard before the wind takes it. I have managed the petals. The centre, where the seed pod sits like a small brass bell, keeps coming out lopsided. You always said I drew like a man signing for a parcel, and you were right, but the peonies I did better. Those two great heads either side, with their overlapping ruffles, I drew without lifting the pen once.

The old woman who runs the bakery on the corner says the peonies only grow on the north side of the island, where the frost lingers into May. She says you have to cut them before the bees find them or they open all at once and rot on the stem. I asked her if she meant the flowers or the mayor. She laughed so hard she had to sit down on her step.

I have pinned the drawing above the bed in the rented room. Every morning the light comes through the shutters and lands on the little dotted sprigs, and I think of the boat that never came and how the lotus rises out of mud without minding it at all. Come on the next crossing, if there is one. Bring the good pen. The one you lost in the sea is still on my list of things I will not forgive the sea for.

Yours, with ink on both hands, Teodor
