The ferry from Holyhead had been rolling since midnight, and Mair Penhallow sat on the stern bench with a sack of seed potatoes between her boots, waiting for the light to come up over the water. Her grandmother had packed three sunflower heads in a biscuit tin before the crossing, dried and heavy, their centres gone to a fine grey stipple like sea-sand under rain. Nobody on the boat had asked what they were for.

At Dún Aonghais, the old woman who kept the lighthouse cottage had told her that a sunflower only turns toward the sun while it is young. Once the head is heavy with seed, it stops, and it faces whichever way the wind has pushed it most. Mair had thought this was a sad thing to say to a girl of nine. Now she set the tin on the rail and watched the sky lift grey to pale, the long wake opening behind them like a folded sheet.

The island came up at last as a dark wedge, three hills in a row, and beneath the nearest one, where the land fell to the shore, a field of sunflowers stood in the wind, every head bowed sideways, heavy and brown and still looking east. Mair counted them the way her grandmother had taught her to count stitches. Nineteen. Then she opened the tin, took out the three heads, and let them go over the rail, one, two, three, so the sea would carry them back to the place they had come from.
