Two peony line drawings on tracing paper
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two peony flower designs drawn in black ink on translucent tracing paper, one smaller at the top and one larger below. The petals are outlined with confident, fine linework, with dotted stippling in the centres and along some petal edges. The sheet is cream in colour, with the tracing paper taped at its corners and the drawings shown in plain black ink with no colour.

The officer at Dover turns the folder over twice before he unclips it, as if the paper might be hiding something smaller. Inside are two sheets of tracing paper, taped at the corners, and on them a pair of peonies drawn in black ink so fine you have to lean in to find where one petal stops and the next begins. He holds the larger one up to the strip light. You watch the light come through the translucent paper and fall across the desk in grey halves.

"Flowers," he says, not quite a question.
"Stencils," you say. "For a man in Leeds who has waited nine months for a peony that doesn't look like a cabbage."
He lays it down and smooths a corner with his thumb, the way you would smooth a letter you mean to read again. The dots in the centres, the stippling along the outer petals, he touches none of them. Outside a lorry reverses with its tinny alarm, and somewhere behind the glass a child is asking for the toilet in Dutch.
Then he surprises you. He says his grandmother grew these along a fence in Kent, red ones that flattened after rain, and she never once let him pick them. He stamps the form. You fold the sheets back into the folder, careful with the tape, and at the door you realise you have been holding your breath the whole time, as if the ink might smudge if you let it out.
