Peony and leaf chest and shoulder tattoo

Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two large peony-style blooms with layered petals, set among dark grey and black leaves and fine swirling tendrils finished with small dots. The linework is crisp and the petals are shaded in muted rose and brown tones, while the foliage and ornament are rendered in black and grey. The design runs diagonally from the collarbone over the shoulder, with the cropped photograph showing a plain black top and a pendant necklace.

The peony woman came down the Tabriz road in the last week of April, when the almond trees along the wadi had finished and the ground was still wet from a night's rain. She carried a carpet roll on one shoulder and a tin box of needles on the other, and when the carter asked what she wanted for the fare she said only that she would pay him in colour.

At the caravanserai at Sarhad the cook's daughter, Parisa, had been sewing the same green hem for three weeks because nothing she tried would stay put. The peony woman sat down beside her, unrolled a strip of cloth no wider than a hand, and showed her how the dark leaves had to be laid before the bloom, so the flower would have something to rest its weight on. Parisa said the leaves were too heavy. The peony woman said heavy things were what kept a flower from blowing away.

They worked through the heat of the afternoon. Where the thread ran out, the peony woman pulled a fine black tendril from her own sleeve and knotted it on, and where the rose-brown petals looked flat she pressed dots of dark wool into the curl of each one until they seemed to breathe. By dusk the strip had two great blooms climbing the cloth at an angle, as if they were leaning toward the lamp in the courtyard.

In the morning the peony woman was gone and the carter was gone with her. Parisa found the cloth folded on the step, the hem finished, and a small brass pendant tied to one corner with a green thread. She wore it on the road to the coast that autumn, and no one at Sarhad ever again asked her why she never stitched a plain leaf.
