Peony and rose forearm tattoo
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large pink peony and a smaller red rose sit on the outer forearm, with clusters of small purple forget-me-not flowers and green leaves filling the gaps. The petals are built up with soft gradients and fine highlights, giving a realistic, painterly finish. The colours are vivid against the pale skin, and the design curls up towards the elbow while the wrist is left clear.

The oven door is still ticking as you lift the last tray of rolls, and Dilys is already shouting over the mixer that the flour delivery came short again. You don't look up. Your hands know the dough better than your head does at four in the morning, and they keep folding while the window goes from black to the colour of wet slate.

On the back bench sit eleven cake boards for the Okafor wedding, each waiting for the peony you promised. You pipe the first by hand: a cushion of pale pink buttercream, a flick of deeper rose at the heart, then petals spiralling outward, overlapping like a skirt being gathered. You turn the board with one thumb, never stopping. Forget-me-nots come last, five tiny petals each, dabbed violet with the very tip of the nozzle, then a few green leaves tucked underneath to hold the whole thing up.
By six the light has found the flour sacks. Dilys wants to know why you've wasted forty minutes on a rose when nobody ordered a rose. You tell her it's for the bride's mother, who asked for something that looked as though it had been left out in the rain and hadn't minded. Dilys snorts and goes back to her invoices, and you pretend not to notice the way she watches you ice the last one.
When the van is loaded you carry the final board out yourself, holding it level with both hands past the bins and the waking pigeons. The sun clears the car park roofs just as you set it on the passenger seat, and for a moment the petals catch the light as if they have only just been piped.
