Pink roses on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two open pink roses and a smaller rose bud, with green and brown leaves at the base, on the outer lower leg. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine highlights, giving a lifelike, three-dimensional look. Warm pink and red tones dominate against the skin, with a faint brown wash behind the flowers, and the design is centred in a blurred background.

The ward lights dim at eleven, and by half past the only sound on Juniper Ward is the drip of the sluice tap that nobody has ever managed to fix. I know its rhythm better than my own pulse. Mrs Okafor in bed four keeps asking for her husband, who died in March, and each time I tell her he's parked the car, and each time she believes me, and I write nothing in the notes about it because there is no box on the form for that.

At two, Dev from agency night staff brings me a tea I didn't ask for and sits on the edge of the trolley. He has a rose on his calf, two of them and a bud, the colour of the inside of a shell. He pulled his sock down to show me when we were both trying to stay awake during the last obs round. Said his nan picked the roses in her garden in Leicester every June and sent him photos until the week she died. He'd had the tattoo done the month after, in a shop above a chippy, and the artist had asked him three times whether he was sure about the brown wash behind the flowers, because it looked like a bruise. He said it was supposed to look like the earth they grew in.
By four the ward has gone grey at the windows. Mrs Okafor is finally asleep. I go and stand by her bed with the chart in my hand and find I'm not reading it. The sluice tap drips. Outside, a gull is shouting at nothing on the car park roof. I write a small line on the back of my hand in biro, the way I do when I'm frightened I'll forget something: ask Dev where the June photos are. Then I go back to work.
