A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud kept the night desk at St Hild's because nobody else wanted the hours, and because the rose by the bins had not been pruned in nine years and would not die. It grew up the brick wall of the kitchen yard, pink at the heart and paler at the edges, the way the sky looks just before it decides about rain. The porters said it was a waste of a wall. Maud said it was the only thing on the site that had never asked her for a form.

The first bloom of the autumn came on a Tuesday, three nights after the old surgeon, Mr Pender, was moved up to the ward on the top floor. He had been a hard man with a soft voice, and he had asked for nothing but a window that opened. Maud took the window seriously. On the Wednesday she cut the rose with the kitchen scissors, wrapped its stem in a wet paper towel and carried it up in the lift, which smelled of disinfectant and the chips somebody had fried at teatime.

He was awake, counting the ceiling tiles the way he did. She held the bloom where he could see it. He looked for a long time, then said the leaves were the wrong green, too bright, like a boy's paint box. Maud agreed. She said the rose was like that, it did not care what colour the wall was.

He laughed, which hurt him, and she left the rose in the water jug on his tray. In the morning the jug was empty, the bed was made, and somebody had written on the whiteboard, in careful capitals, that the window was open.
