Rose cluster on the outer thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of two large roses, several buds and layered leaves runs diagonally across the outer thigh. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading inside the petals and leaves, and small dots scattered around the arrangement. The photograph is taken close up in soft light, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Ned,

The lock at Sallow Bridge has been kept by the same family since before the cut was widened, and the keeper's wife, Mrs Pardoe, grows roses up the brick wall of her cottage. Two of them are the size of saucers now. I told her you would not believe me, so I took a cutting, wrapped it in wet newspaper and tucked it into the cabin by the stove, where it has been sulking ever since.
We reached Brentford on Tuesday with the Marigold riding low and the hold full of coal for the gasworks. Dad spent the whole passage swearing at the tiller ropes, and I spent it sketching leaves on the back of a waybill because it was the only paper aboard not already spoiled. Every time we pass under a bridge the buds knock against the roof and drop grit onto my page. I have decided this is the mark of a true bargee's daughter.
The thing I wanted to tell you is that Mrs Pardoe asked me to take the cutting to you, not to keep it on the boat. She said a rose wants a wall and a south-facing bed, and you have both now behind the depot cottage. So when this reaches you, go and find the spade under the stairs. Dig by the water butt. Mind the nettles.
Love, Nell
