Peony cluster on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several peony blooms, including deep red open flowers, paler pink blooms and closed buds, with dark green leaves and stems winding down the outer thigh. The linework is dark and defined, with soft shading inside the petals to show depth. Colour dominates, with the reds and pinks set against the green foliage and the bare skin, and the image is cropped to the hip and thigh.

The frost came down off the fen in the night like a cold hand, and by six Nell Harrow was on her knees in the peony beds with a paraffin lamp, counting buds by feel as much as sight. Her father had told her to cut the open blooms for the London man, Pryce, who was driving up from Spalding in his grey Humber to fill his van by Friday. The closed ones, he said, could stay on the stems and rot for all he cared, and then he coughed until he had to sit down on the upturned crate by the potting shed.

She did as he asked for the pale pinks, the ones that had already opened and gone soft at the edges, and she left the dark reds alone. Those were still tight as fists, wound low in the bank where the leaves grew thick and glossy, and she had a stubborn feeling about them that she could not have explained to Pryce or to anyone. Pryce came at eleven, looked at the pale stems laid out on sacking, and bought them for a fair price without once looking at the bank.
The frost lifted on the Thursday, and by Saturday morning the closed buds had split open all at once, heavy-headed and dark as wet wool. Nell carried a basket of them to the village show marquee, where the judges were already arguing over the dahlias, and set them on the trestle nearest the flap of canvas. Her father came in leaning on the tent pole. He stopped in front of the basket for a long time, then picked a single red petal from the top bloom and held it up to the light coming through the canvas.
He said nothing at all, which from Walter was as good as a rosette.
