Peony flower design within a triangle

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black ink drawing of a peony bloom with layered petals, a dense stippled centre and dark silhouetted leaves behind it. A thin outlined triangle overlaps the flower, and two black pens lie on the white paper in the foreground. The artwork uses fine hatching and solid black fills, with no colour.

The triangle came first, because Mr Haskett would not let a single line go down on his plate until it had been measured against the brass rule. Ada sat at the far end of the long bench with her two pens, a fine one for the hatching and a broad one for the black, and waited for him to finish his tea.

He had been drawing peonies for thirty years, he said, and had never once got the centre right. The petals were easy. Any fool could make a petal fold over itself. The middle was where the thing lived, a crowd of tiny dots like a pincushion gone to seed, and it could not be rushed. Ada stippled until her wrist ached, dot after dot, while the lamp hissed and the rain worked at the skylight above them.

On the Thursday the leaves went black. Haskett looked at what she had done to the foliage behind the bloom and said that shadow was the only honest part of any drawing. Then he laid the triangle over the flower, so that the bloom sat half inside it and half out, like something caught mid-step in a doorway. 'Now they'll ask what it means,' he said. 'Tell them it's the rule, and the flower's the argument.' He never told her what he meant. When the plate was printed she kept the first proof, black on white, and the centre was still soft after all those years of his correcting it.
