Three roses in a black and grey cluster
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of three open roses with curled petals and several leaves, grouped in a loose diagonal cluster across the paper. The linework is fine and precise, with soft hatched and stippled shading that gives the petals and leaves depth. The design is in greyscale on a pale background, with two pens resting in the lower right corner.

Don't look at me like that, Maureen, I haven't finished, and you know I never finish one before the sherry runs out. Sit down by the urn. Right. Mr Pargeter taught botany in the old block at Ashdown Grammar, the year the boiler died, and he made us draw one rose a week until our hands ached. Nobody liked it. Nobody except Patricia Lowe, who could shade a petal so it looked wet.

The three of them, Patricia and Jean Holloway and the quiet Pennington girl, used to sit on the radiator in the lab and swap sketches under the desk. Pencil only, because Mr Pargeter confiscated ink. They drew the same bush from the greenhouse every Thursday. By the summer it had gone over, and they were still drawing it, three roses leaning into each other the way we leant in those days, pretending not to listen to the head teacher.
Then the Pennington girl moved to Leeds in the August and never wrote. Jean married a man from the bakery. Patricia went abroad to draw for a living, and I'm told she did. Forty years on, a parcel arrived at the hall marked for the reunion committee, and inside was a single sheet, three roses in grey, the leaves hatched so finely you could count them. On the back, in Patricia's careful hand: for whoever remembers the greenhouse.
So I've brought it tonight, and I'll pin it on the board by the door where the name badges are. If you look closely at the lowest leaf, you'll see it's been signed by all three of them in pencil, which is the only way we ever signed anything worth keeping.
