Peony in a black circle on the calf

Japanese · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large peony flower is tattooed at the centre of a solid black circle on a bare limb. The petals are rendered with smooth grey shading and pale highlights, with darker leaves behind the bloom. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a dark top, jeans and a red wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time the snow had shut the lower road, the lacquer box was the only thing in my pack that still felt warm. Tomas Venn gave it to me at the Hollin Gate with a face like he was handing over a live coal, told me to deliver it to the widow at the top farm before the thaw, and said not to open it.

I opened it at the second cairn, out of the wind. Inside, on a cushion of felt gone the colour of stewed tea, sat a round lid no wider than my palm. Someone had painted a peony on it, the bloom tight and pale as a bruised pearl, set in a black ground so deep the lacquer swallowed my lamp. The petals were shaded so softly you wanted to touch them, and then you noticed the leaves, dark on dark, crowding behind the flower like neighbours behind a door.

Agnes Rook had been married to the man who painted it for thirty-one years, and in all that time she never asked him for anything but peonies. He made her one every spring. This was the last, finished the week before his heart stopped in the workshop with the brush still wet on the bench. Tomas had found it there, drying.

When I reached the top farm the light was draining out of the valley like milk down a sink. Agnes took the box without a word, turned the lid to the window, and studied it for a long time. Then she set it on the sill facing the dark, and I understood she meant to let the flower keep watch over the night before she closed it away.
