Small shaded rose on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small rose is tattooed on the upper arm, with its petals drawn as layered, open curves. The rose is rendered in black ink with soft grey shading and fine hatched linework that gives the petals depth. The plain pale skin and white sleeve keep the focus on the tattoo, which sits near the centre of the frame.

Nell had been awake since four, pressing the last of the petals flat under a stack of hymn books, when the bride rang to say she wanted the roses to look like drawings. "Not pink," Maeve said down the line. "Grey, like someone sketched them on a wet afternoon and forgot to finish."

So Nell spent the morning with a stub of graphite and a mug of cold tea, working shadow into the paper wrapped around each stem. Her grandmother had taught her that you never fill a petal in one go. You lay the layers open, curve by curve, and let the darkest part sit deep in the middle where the light cannot reach. By nine the trestle tables in the marquee looked less like a florist's van had emptied onto the grass and more like a sketchbook left open in the sun.
The groom's mother arrived at half ten with a carrier bag and a rose that had clearly come from her own back wall. It was dark red, nearly black at the edges, and its head had begun to loosen. "He wants this one in the buttonhole," she said. "It was his father's favourite. Don't make it grey."
Nell turned it over in her palm for a long moment. Then she took the graphite from her apron pocket and, very lightly, drew the outer petals of the old bloom the way she had drawn all the others, so the red softened into a shadow that could have gone either way. She pinned it to the groom's lapel and stepped back. In the stiff morning light it looked like something that had decided, after all, to stay.
