Two black and grey tattoos: a shaded peony on the outer thigh on the left, and a rose within overlapping diamond outlines on the forearm on the right.

Peony on thigh and rose in geometric frame on forearm

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The left photo shows a large, shaded peony with layered petals and leaves on the outer thigh, rendered in black and grey with soft gradients. The right photo shows a rose with fine outlines and stippled shading inside an overlapping pair of diamond-shaped geometric lines on the inner forearm. Both tattoos are in black ink only, and each is centred on its body area against a plain light background.

Hush now, and mind the step, because the old glasshouse on Tallow Ridge has a crack in its floor that has swallowed three apprentices and one goat. Tamsin Vell had kept the place alive through eleven dust winters, when the sun went behind the Scarp for half a year and nothing grew that wasn't stubborn. Her roses were stubborn. So were her peonies, which she had grafted onto rose stock because the peony would not bloom in that thin light unless it had something tougher to lean on.

The lattice over the beds was her grandfather's work. He had cut every pane from salvaged hull plate and set them in pairs, two diamonds overlapping like a pair of hands folded over one another, though he was no praying man. When the midday light came through, it fell across the soil in tilted lozenges, and the roses turned towards them the way a crowd turns towards a bell. Tamsin used to say the diamonds were the only straight lines left on the Ridge, and that a rose needed something straight to remember which way was up.

The magistrate's clerk came in the eleventh winter with a requisition for the glass. The lowland domes were failing, he said, and the Ridge had light to spare. Tamsin walked him down the beds without a word. At the far end, where the lattice had cracked, a single peony had opened in the dark, every petal shaded from charcoal at the heart to pale at the rim, and its leaves stood out beside it like folded hands. The clerk looked for a long while. Then he signed the requisition for the domes, and left the glass exactly where it was.
