Peony tattoo on the inner wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A peony-style flower is tattooed on the inner wrist, with its outer petals outlined in dark ink and layered inner petals and a dense dark centre. The shading is soft and muted, with pinkish-grey washes in the petals and black detail in the centre. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame, with a hand with dark nails raised at the top left and white fabric at the bottom.

Mrs Agnes Rowntree had kept the peony in a tin bath behind the coal shed since the year the Hetton pit took her husband's brother. Every October she dug the root out of the cold clay and split it with a bread knife, and every October Walter from the next row told her it would never flower under that much soot. It flowered anyway, a wet pink fist of petals that opened for three days in June and then dropped onto the step like something apologising.

In 1961 the colliery closed its last shift at noon, and the lads came up the lane with their lamps still clipped to their caps, looking for something to do with their hands. Agnes gave them spades. By teatime the whole street had a trench dug along the back wall, and she sat on an upturned bucket watching them lift the peony in a hessian sack, her grandson Eddie swearing under his breath because the root was heavier than it looked.
They replanted it at the top of the old tip, where nothing grew except coltsfoot and rust-coloured dust. Eddie's mother said it was daft. Agnes said a flower did not care what ground it had been born in, only that someone came back in spring to check on it.
The next June the tip was pink for a week, and the men who had once gone down under it stood at the gate with their caps off, not saying much, just looking at the dark centres opening like small lamps turned up low.
