Black and grey rose on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic rose with a tightly coiled centre and open outer petals, shown with small leaves around the base. The tattoo uses smooth black and grey shading to show depth and the curve of the petals. The photograph is taken close up against a plain pale wall, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The big top had sprung a leak over the ring, so Lorna Pell stood on an upturned crate and dabbed the rain off her sketch with the cuff of her coat. Eleven weeks of the season were left, the bank had stopped answering its phone, and the poster for the final show still needed its centrepiece: a rose the size of a cartwheel, which her father had insisted on drawing by hand rather than paying a printer in Leeds.

He had drawn roses all his life, on wagon panels and the lids of biscuit tins, and he taught her to start from the middle. 'Coil the heart first,' Ned Pell said, his hand steady over the paper while the generator coughed outside. 'Tight as a fist. Then let the petals fall open like they've given up arguing.' She had thought it was a line about the circus. Only later did she understand he meant the shading, the black pressed deep into the centre so the outer petals could look pale and lifted in the light.

The show folded in Carlisle. The horses went to a farm near Penrith and the clowns took jobs at a garden centre. Lorna kept the poster, rolled in a cardboard tube, and when the rain finally stopped she unrolled it on the kitchen table. The rose had bled through the paper where her father's thumb had rested, a soft grey smudge like a bruise on a petal.

She pinned the tube above the sink and went out to the van, where the tent poles lay stacked against the hedge. She stood among them for a while, then went back inside, took the pencil from behind her ear, and began again at the centre, coiling it tight.
