Peony tattoos on a back seen through a cut-out shirt

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

Large floral tattoos cover the upper back, with bold peony blooms and leaves drawn in dark outline. The skin is seen through irregular holes cut into a black top, so the designs appear in separate panels. The tattoos are shaded in black and grey with soft tonal fills, and the composition is close and angled across the back.

She worked by the greenhouse wall until the sun slid off the stones. Each petal she cut as a separate piece, leaving thin ribs of silk between them so the whole head would hold together when the wind came off the lake. The painter, an old man named Guo who smelled of ink and camphor, came and looked over her shoulder and said nothing for a long time. Then he tapped one leaf and said the outline was too loud. Let the shadow do the speaking, he said. A peony is not a shout. It is a room with the windows open.

She finished the last panel as the lamps were lit. Guo held it to the candle, and the paper behind it bloomed with pale rose, the black edges curling like smoke. He turned it toward her and for once he smiled. Keep the knife, he said. The emperor will want more windows before the spring rains, and every flower you cut from the dark is one more way for the light to get in.
