Corset lacing tattoo across the back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare back shows a black and grey tattoo of a laced corset, with cross-laced cords running through metal eyelets down the centre. The corset fabric is shaded with soft gradients and fine vertical creases, giving it a dimensional, almost textile-like appearance. A dark hook shape sits at the lower left, against a plain black background that makes the tattoo stand out.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have laced Mrs Hollis's stays every Monday since the spring, sitting on the edge of the bed in the back room at Seaview House while the gulls squabble over the bins outside. The cords are waxed black cotton you bought in Scarborough with your last shilling, and the eyelets are brass, pressed in with a tool that bites your thumb. Mrs Hollis says you pull like a sailor hauling a mainsheet, and she has never once complained that she can't breathe.

The lodgers come and go on the second floor. There is a commercial traveller in buttons who tips well and a widow who never unpacks her trunk. Downstairs the sea works at the wall all night. You learn to cross the cord over and under, tight at the waist and looser at the top, so the lacing holds without slipping. The iron hook on the back of the door is rusted at its tip, and it is the first thing your eye finds when you come up the stairs in the dark.

On the last Monday of September Mrs Hollis does not come to the back room. Her daughter does instead, carrying a parcel in brown paper and a key for the linen press. Inside the parcel, folded in tissue, is a corset of black silk that nobody has worn in years, its eyelets green at the edges. Her daughter says her mother asked for it to be laced by someone who would not hurry.

You sit down on the bed and start with the bottom eyelet, the way you were taught. The house is quiet except for the sea. When the last cross is drawn and tied, you hang the stays on the hook and leave the top two eyelets loose, so whoever comes next can pull them tight themselves.
