Pharaoh portrait and wings on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed portrait of a pharaoh figure wearing a striped nemes headdress covers the forearm, with feathered wings rising across the upper arm. The shading is smooth and realistic, using soft grey tones and dark shadows to model the face, headdress and folds of the fabric. The image is a close, angled shot of the arm against a blurred background, with a gold wristwatch and light-coloured trousers visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Tom, the frost has held for nine days now, so the plough has been sitting in the shed and I have been walking the top field instead, looking at what the thaw gave us in November. Dad always said the ground at Holm Farm kept its secrets. Last week the harrow turned up a stone face the size of a cabbage, grey as wet slate, with its eyes half shut as if it had only just been woken.

It wore a striped cloth down past its ears, folded in stiff pleats like a pillowcase somebody had starched too hard. Behind the shoulders, cut so shallow you could barely catch the edge with a thumbnail, were wings. Feathers, row on row, sweeping back over where the field drops to the beck. Mrs Abbott from the village came up with her spectacles and said it was a saint, then changed her mind and said it was a queen, then said it was nothing to do with us and should go back in the ground.
I have it on the kitchen windowsill now, between the marmalade and the jar of rusty nails. Every morning the light comes low across the yard and the wings throw shadow into the crevices, and for a minute it looks like it is about to speak. I have not told the man from the council. Let it stay a while. Come home at Easter and tell me what you think it is, because I have decided it is yours as much as mine.
