Ornamental mandala bands on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the forearm with stacked horizontal bands of ornament, including lotus flowers, paisley drops, hearts and scrolling filigree. The work uses fine black linework, dense dotwork fills and solid black bands, with no colour ink. The design is centred on the arm and fills the frame from the wrist to just below the elbow, against a plain light background.

The brass rings came out of the kiln still warm, and Nadia had cut the same lotus eleven times before her father's old rival would let it leave the bench. He held the stylus up to the lamp and turned the band slowly, the way a buyer turns a stone, searching for the one hair of a line that would give the game away.

Her father had died with a row of unfinished bands on the shelf above the anvil, each one stopped halfway round. Nobody in Varanpur bought a half-finished ring, so she had learned to finish what he left. Paisley drops first, then the dotted rule that marked the wedding bands. Hearts last, because the heart was where the maker signed his name.
On the night the snow shut the pass, a traveller came down to the workshop with a bundle of cloth and a sister's measurements. He wanted a set of bands that would stack one above another and run from the elbow down to the wrist without a break. Nadia counted the scrolls twice. She could not make a seam that did not show, so she let each dark rule meet a pale field and hid the joins in the filigree like vines behind a garden wall.
When the pass cleared in spring, the traveller returned for the set. She fitted the last band with her own hands and saw the heart at the bottom, the one she had drawn without thinking, and knew it was the heart her father never finished. She had finished it after all, and the stranger was already walking up the road toward the mountains, turning the rings in the light.
