Elephant head mandala on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the back of a hand and shows a front-facing elephant head with tusks, a trunk running down towards the fingers, and a decorated headdress with a mandala-style border above. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast and soft grey gradients across the trunk and ears. The image is in black and grey, and the blurred background focuses attention on the hand.

By the time the rain reached the fishmongers at the bottom of Crane Street, I had already sold the two brass elephants nobody wanted and lost the only customer who had asked for a receipt. Rain on a market is a patient thing. It finds the seam of every tarpaulin and waits. I stood under my gazebo with a tin of spare pennies and watched the gutter fill with cabbage leaves.

Old Dev Sandhu, two pitches along, kept a box of broken things he called his scrap of gods. He had a bronze lamp with one leg gone, a small Ganesha with its trunk snapped clean off, and a tusk he kept in a matchbox. 'Scribe's tool,' he said, when I asked. 'The story goes the elephant-headed one wrote out the great epic with his own broken tusk, because the man dictating it talked too fast for any pen. Snapped the thing on the first line and kept going.'

I didn't believe him, but I bought the matchbox for a pound because it was raining and the only other thing for sale was my own shadow. That night I sat at the kitchen table and tried to write to my sister, who had not answered since March. The biro skipped. I sharpened a pencil down to a stub and it still wouldn't carry my hand across the page.

In the morning I found the tusk had slipped into the lining of my coat. I mixed ink from coffee grounds and rainwater and wrote her one line with it: come and fetch the rest of your things. She came on Saturday under a borrowed umbrella, and she read the line twice before she looked up at me.
