A piglet with a dark patch over one eye rests its head over the rim of a grey teacup, with a large red rose on the cup and a blue and white banded saucer below. The big top came down on Tuesday for the last time, and nobody cried except Mr Ashdown, and he was crying about the price of diesel. We're in a lay-by outside Thirsk now, lorries nose to tail, the cook frying eggs on a camping stove. You asked about Pearl in your last letter and I didn't answer properly, so here it is.

Pearl is the little sow with the dark patch over one eye. She was the last turn before the interval, the teacup act. Ashdown would fill a grey china cup with straw, the one with the painted rose on its side, and Pearl would climb in, rest her chin on the rim and look out over the stalls as if she were waiting for a bus. Children screamed every night. Nobody ever asked how she got in there.

Last Friday, at the Ripon field, the cup slipped off its stand. Pearl stayed put anyway. She sat with her front trotters over the edge while the band played the wrong tune twice, and when Ashdown lifted the cup off her she shook herself and walked out through the flap as though she'd finished a shift. Ashdown has sold the tent to a farmer near Malton, and the cup is now upside down in the horsebox, full of straw.

I took the saucer. I don't know why, only that it has a band of pearls round the rim and the blue runs out before the white does, which seemed about right for us. Pearl is asleep beside the cup now, head on the china, and I think she'll miss it more than any of us.
